Mary was born in 1867 in South Hetton, Co Durham.¹ Mary's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Jane Pickering. Her paternal grandparents were Archibald Knowles and Ann Hope; her maternal grandfather was William Pickering. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, William, Robert, Jane, Sarah, Ann, Barbara and Margaret. She was the youngest of the nine children.
