Thomason Muir was born on December 7th, 1856.  Thomason Muir's father was Sir William Muir and his mother was Elizabeth Huntly Wemyss.  His paternal grandparents were William Muir and Helen; his maternal grandparents were James Wemyss and Caroline Charlotte Binfield. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named William, James, John, Archibald, Charles, Wemyss, Caroline, Helen, Elizabeth, Katherine, Margaret, Agnes, Jean and Helen.  Agnes and Thomason Muir were twins.
