William was born on April 27th, 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland. William's father was William Muir and his mother was Helen. He had two brothers named John and Mungo. He died at the age of 86 in 1905.
General Notes
William was a lowland Scot who referred to himmself as an Englishman. In 1837 William Muir travels to India by the “overland” route (i.e. via Egypt).
When a young man had received from one of the Directors of the Honourable East India Company a “writership” or nomination to the Covenanted Civil Service, it used to be necessary that he should obtain a certificate of moral character from the head of one of the schools in England. The persons thus nominated to the Civil Service had to spend two years in the Company’s College at Hailybury in Hertfordshire, and to pass many examinations in both European and Oriental knowledge before proceeding to India
