Emily was born in 1873 in New Zealand.¹ Emily's father was John Edward COOK and her mother was Fanny HALL. Her maternal grandparents were Elijah HALL and Sarah SILVESTER. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Ted, George, Sarah, Louisa, Annie, Lottie, Fanny and Daisy. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
