John was born in 1837 in Chacombe, Northants.  John's father was Thomas CHINNER and his mother was Elizabeth WATTS. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Henry, Clement, James, Frances, Elizabeth, Hannah and Charlotte.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
