Joannes was born on August 9th, 1832.  Joannes' father was Ferdinandus Pieters and his mother was Isabelle Duyvejonck.  His paternal grandparents were Joannes Pieters and Livina Therese Mestdagh; his maternal grandparents were Joannes Duyvejonck and Brigitta Blanckaert. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Leo, Carel, Ivo, Frederic, Eduard, levenloos, Amelia and Levenloos.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
