Mary was born on March 4th, 1894 in Hauxwell, York, England and her christening took place there on May 27th, 1894.1 Mary's father was Samuel Whitling and her mother was Elizabeth Graham. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Manfield and Rebecca Whitling; her maternal grandparents were Humphrey Graham and Ann Langsthorne. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John, Samuel, Robert, Richard, Rebecca and Harriet. She was the second youngest of the eight children.-
