Mary E. was born in 1876 in Rockingham Co, NC. Mary E.'s father was Robert J. Roberts and her mother was Julia A. Webster. Her paternal grandparents were Martin Roberts and Elizabeth Gilliland. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard Martin, Robert L., Lawrence E. 'Tosh', Thomas, John W., Elizabeth, Margaret L. and Cora A..
