Nannie A was born in May 1883 in Davie, North Carolina.1 Nannie A's father was Joseph Henry Foster and her mother was Louise Angelica Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Weldon " William" Goode Foster and Zilphia "Silpha" Jarvis. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Herman, John Kerr, Nola Shell, Ila Ida, Charlotte B., Maggie L and Clara. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She had seven half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Joseph William, Joseph W, Arland M, Cleland Miller, Cleland Miller, Alvin W, Alvin, Martha Evelyn, Evelina, Mary Walton, Mary W. and Nina May.-
