Alfa S was born in April 1887 in Indiana. Alfa S' father was Garrett Van Foster and his mother was Mary Mate Miller. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Martin Foster and Cynthia Ann Jolly. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas Irwin, Ralph Miller, Frank Leland, Minerva Opal, Ruby Mae and Maud Reland. He was the oldest of the seven children.-
