He was delivered by a black midwife, Maggie Fuller, of Route 1, Ailey,Georgia at 10 AM. She signed the birth certificate with an "X." Itwas not filed until September 28th of that year, and even then, hestill did not have a first name.
General Notes
Without ever being given a legal name, he was known as Bookey(pronounced BOO-key) until age four, when his sister Lois - still ateenager - took matters in hand and asked him what name he wanted. Hereplied "Robert E. Lee." She thought this a little pretentious andreduced it to just Robert, no middle name. She went to the countycourthouse in Mt. Vernon and initiated a supplemental reportreflecting his new name. On his birth certificate, one can see thatthe space for his name was left blank and later "Robert" was added inanother handwriting style.
He attended Kirkwood Elementary school in Atlanta.
