Catherine was born about 1535. Catherine's father was William+ Ruthven and her mother is Janet+ Halyburton. Her paternal grandfather was William+ Ruthven and her paternal grandmother is Joan+ Hepburn; her maternal grandfather was Patrick+ Halyburton and her maternal grandmother is Margaret+ Douglas.
