Sarah was born about 1734 in Hopewell, Frederick, VA. Sarah's father was John+ Mills and her mother was Sarah+ Beals. Her paternal grandparents were John+ Mills and Rachel+ Bates; her maternal grandparents were John II+ Beals and Sarah+ Bowater. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John III, John, Joseph, Phebe, Hannah+, Elizabeth Ann, Keziah and Mary. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
