General Notes

Richard Shipley, the first child of Adam Shipley and Lois Howard marriedabout 1703, Susannah Stevens, a relative of the wife of his brotherRobert, whose name is verified from the will of John Stevens, hergrandfather. Richard was the eldest son and by right of primogeniture theheir of his father. In his gifts of property to his younger brothers andsisters he gives as his motive, "natural love and affection." He claimedno virtue for his justice and made a fair distribution of the estate. Hiswill breathes piety and faith in God and makes ample provision that thefamily might be kept together. He died a comparatively young man, havingmade his last will and Testament October 5, 1724, which was probatedOctober 24, 1725, between which dates his death certainly occurred At thetime of his passing, none of his children were of age. His descendantsare probably the most numerous of all the Shipleys who trace theirancestry back to Adam.

The Registers of Saint Anne"s Church, Annapolis, and of Saint John'sParish, Baltimore County, Maryland, carry identical records of thebaptism of "John, son of Richard and Susannah Shipley, born March 25,1716, baptized, July 29, 1717." The absence of John's name in the willwould suggest that this son died in infancy or at some time earlier thatthe execution of the will, which was eight years after John's baptism.
