ON MAY 27, 1638 MATTHEW APPLIED FOR HIS HEAD-RIGHTS IN FINANCING HIS OWN AND HIS WIFE'S PASSAGE TO VIRGINIA. SOMETIME BETWEEN 1652 AND 1658, MATTHEW HOWARD SETTLED AT PROVIDENCE (NOW ANNAPOLIS), MARYLAND, WHERE HE DIED SEPT 1659.
LUTTRELL FILES: Matthew settled in Virginia before 1623 on the East Bank of the Elizabeth River near the parish of Norfolk after having been among the first settlers of Anne Arundel County. He came with many Puritan and Independent families from Virginia

Emigration to America, the Land of Promise, was the order of the day and in company with the family of their mother, who had been Ann Throughgood, they all came to America and to Virginia. Laura also states: Settled in Lower Norfolk Parish, near Portsmouth, Virginia and was granted 150 acres of land there. He left no will (See hotten). Cornelius Howard, son of Matthew Howard and Ann (Hall) Howard became the most prominent member of the family in the early Maryland affairs. He died in 1680. His will, made in 1680 was witnessed by Phillip Calvert and John Howard. In his will he mentions his children and lists for them his estate as including: Howards Hope, South side of Severn. Howards Hardship Howards Hill Hockley Branch Tuckahoe on Clapstack River Howards Porters Range. All were grants from The Crown. Cornelius Howard I was Ensign in the Maryland Militia Command of the Severn in 1661, and was a member of the House of Burgess 1671-1675. Was known as Captain. In 1674 he was appointed to draw up a petition to the governor to pardon John Gorman who was condemned for witchcraft. His will, probated at Annapolis in 1680, was written by John Hammond.
