Nicholas was born about 1218 in <, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England>.1 Nicholas' father was William Longespee , Earl of Salisbury and his mother was Ela d'Évreux. His paternal grandparents were "Curt Mantel" King of England Henry II and Annabel Balliol; his maternal grandparents were William Fitzpatrick and Eleanor (Alianore) De Vitre. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Richard, Stephen, Ela, Isabel, Petronilla, Isa, Ida (Idonea) "Camvile" and Lora. He was the third youngest of the ten children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named s Earl of Ulster, Ela and Ela "The Younger". He died in 1297 in , Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, England.
