Robert II Curthose Duke of Normandy 
Robert II was born in 1054 in Normandy, France.1 Robert II's father was "The Conqueror" King of England William I and his mother was Countess Of Flanders- Queen of England Maud. His paternal grandparents were "The Magnificent" Duke Of Normandy Robert I and Harlette De Falaise Countess of Mortaigne; his maternal grandparents were Count of Flanders Baldwin V and Adelaide Havoise Princess Of France. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Richard Prince of, "Beauclerc", King Of England, Rufus King of England, Princess of England, Matilda, Constance, Maud Margaret Princess of and Cecilia the Nun. He had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Raymond of, Etienne of, CountVienne,Macon,Burgund, Governor of Toledo, Sibylle of and Ermentrude. He died at the age of 80 on February 3rd, 1134 in Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, Wales.1 General Notes

!Described as a short man, fat in the face and stout in body, so that he was called Gam-baron or Breviis-Ocrea (Short Boot, usually rendered as Curthose), a nickname said to have been given him by his father. He was a bold and skilled soldier and an excellent archer. He was generous and talkative and spoke clearly and fluently. He was also called prodigal, shifty, and a liar. Not well educated. !After the conquest of Jerusalem, Robert set out homeward. It is related that the crown of Jerusalem, which was ultimately worn by Godfrey of Bouillon, had been offered to him. He preferred his dukedom. Passing through the Norman dominions in Italy, he was cordially received at the court of Geoffrey of Conversana, in Apulia; and there, amidst all the refinements of a chivalric life, he lingered long, and finally married Sibylla, the daughter of his entertainer. With his young and beauteous wife he received a marriage-portion, amply sufficient to redeem his mortgaged dukedom. They arrived in Normandy within a few weeks of Henry's being firmly seated on the throne of England. [Knight's Popular History of England, Vol. 1, p. 262]

!He was a stocky, black-haired, genial man whose brilliant soldiering was not matched by political skill. An inveterate plotter, he was often at war with his brother William Rufus, typically winning the battles but losing the peace. He distinguished himself in the First Crusade, and returning to Normandy heard that Rufus was dead and that Henry was king of England. Incensed at being
passed over yet again, he invaded England in 1101 but was tricked by Henry into recognizing him as king. Robert continued to plot and Henry invaded Normandy, taking Robert prisoner at Tinchebrain in 1106. Robert lived thereafter in honorable captivity at Devizes and Cardiff.
