Her paternal grandparents are William Salmon and Nancy Smith; her maternal grandparents were John Henry Tutor and Martha Patsy Betts. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Silas A, James Andrew, John Henry, Catherine Loretta, Henrietta McClain, Penetta A. and Aresta. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
