Thomas was born in September 1869 in Knott Co., Kentucky.1 Thomas' father was Benjamin Ritchie and his mother is Rose Ann Combs. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Grigsby Ritchie and Kissiah Smith. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Joshua, Gabriel, Franklin, Malissa Jane, Sinthia and Naomi.
