William was born on April 26th, 1866 in Knott Co., Kentucky.1 William's father was Benjamin Ritchie and his mother is Rose Ann Combs. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Grigsby Ritchie and Kissiah Smith. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joshua, Gabriel, Franklin, Malissa Jane, Sinthia and Naomi.
