Samuel was born in May 1840 in Perry Co., Kentucky.1 Samuel's father was Thomas Grigsby Ritchie and his mother was Kissiah Smith. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Crockett Ritchie and Elizabeth Susan Grigsby. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Benjamin, James Irvine, Joshua, William, Thomas, Armelda, Elizabeth and Serena. He is the fifth oldest of the ten children.General Notes
