Her paternal grandparents were Miles Norton Allen and Mary Penelope Dodson; her maternal grandparents were John L. Johnson and Eliza McGee. She had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Miles Johnson, Samuel Norton, John Linder, Jack L., Winifred Margaret and Susan Penelope. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
