Captian of the Militia of District 13 in 1776. He entered service in 1780 and served three months as ensign in Capt. John Rush's company in Col. William Nall's Virginia Regiment. He also served from 19 July 1781 for about three months as ensign with Virginia troops under Col. Nall, Dark, and Mathews. In 1789 John and wife, Francis, moved to Pearisburg, Virginia. They bought two tracts of land that were deeded to their sons in 1807. One tract was fifty acres on the south side of New River and the other was thirty acres on Laurel Creek. John served on the Grand Jury of the Second Court of Giles Co., Virginia on 10 June 1806 and on the First Petit Jury. Ref: Giles County History.
John was an 1832 Cnesus Revolutionary War Pensioner at 81 years of age and a "settler" in Giles County.
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1776 John was 21. He became Captain of the Militia District 13 in 1776. According to his pension claim S5897. While living in Rockingham County Va. he entered the service, in 1780 shortly before the battle of Camden and served as ensign in Capt. John Rush's company in Colonel Nall's Virginia Regiment. He served from July 19, 1781 for abt. 3 months as ensignwith the Virginia Troops under Capt. Ragen and Colonels' William Nall, Dark, amd Matthews. John Peters was allowed pension on his application executedJuly 31, 1832 at which time he was 77 years old and living in Giles County Va.
