Sarah was born in 1812 in ,Greenbriar,Virginia. Sarah's father was Joshua Tate and her mother was Susanna Hinecker. Her paternal grandparents are Mathew Tate and Elizabeth UNKNOWN; her maternal grandparents were Christian P. Hinecker and Nancy UNKNOWN. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Simeon, Preston, William Riley, John Robert, George Washington, Maria, Elizabeth and Phoebe Ann. She was the oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 68 in January 1880 in Kanawha Co., VA. She was buried in Humphreys Cem, Sissonville, Kanawha, WV.-
