Her paternal grandparents were Mathias Gayhart I Young and Nancy Sarah Hickman; her maternal grandparents were Joshua Tate and Susanna Hinecker. She had six brothers and five sisters, named William Lewis, Mathias S., Simeon, John H. P., George Robert, Henry Fry, Mary Ann, Susan Catherine, Matilda A., Nancy and Julia A.. She is the sixth youngest of the twelve children.-
