Stephen was born on February 8th, 1850 in , Coffee Co, Tennessee. Stephen's father was Wiley Preston SHELTON and his mother was Matilda Ann GIBSON. His paternal grandparents were Jessee SHELTON and Lydia KEELE; his maternal grandparents are James GIBSON and Nancy KEELE. He had eight brothers and a sister, named James K P, John Martin, Jessie Ervin, Harvey Ransom, William Harrison, Bartley M, Thomas Neilious, Wiley Wilson and Nancy Jane. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 43 in 1893 in , Coffee Co, Tennessee.General Notes
