Barkley's father was Aaron Ford Jones and his mother was Mahola Ann Helen Carter.  His paternal grandparents were Erasmus Jones and Amiah Unknown; his maternal grandparents are Winslow , Jr. Carter and Elizabeth Unknown. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Artasursas Alexander B., Thomas Moore, John M. Forest, Elizabeth and Rebecca Barthina. He had seven half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Joseph W., James S., David Washington, Samuel Thompson, Aaron Fuqua, Henry Calvin, James Augustus, Martha Elizabeth, Mary Isabelle, Nancy Cari and America Ann "Annie" Barthina.
