John Porter Gannon 
John Porter was born on February 2nd, 1813 in , Guilford, NC. John Porter's father was George Gannon and his mother was Joanna Whitt. His paternal grandparents were Perry Gannon and Esther Andrew; his maternal grandparents are Shadrack Whitt and Celey UNKNOWN. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel P, William E., Nitha Ann, Rebecca, Roxanna and UNKNOWN. He was the oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named George Washington and Mary Ann. He died at the age of 57 in 1870 in , Cannon, TN.General Notes

JOHN PORTER GANNON IMMIGRATED TO TENNESSEE WITH HIS FATHER IN 1823. HE MARRIED ELIZABETH HAYES, A NATIVE OF VIRGINIA AND OF ENGLISH DESCENT, IN 1837. ELIZABETH DIED IN 1858 LEAVING SEVEN CHILDREN. HE MARRIED A SECOND TIME TO RHODA TRAVIS IN 1859. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN.
JOHN PORTER GANNON WAS A CAPTAIN IN THE MEXICAN WAR (1846-48). HE FOLLOWED FARMING AND STOCK RAISING ALL HIS LIFE. HE WAS A STRICT MEMBER OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH AND A STRONG TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE NEVER ALLOWING WHISKEY TO ENTER HIS HOUSE EXCEPT IN THE FORM OF MEDICINE. HIS LIFE WAS AN EXEMPLARY ONE, BOTH AS A CHRISTIAN GENTLEMAN AND AS A MEMBER OF SOCIETY. HE DIED IN AUGUST, 1870. (GOOD SPEED - HISTORY OF EASTERN ARKANSAS PAGE 530).

John immigrated to TN with his father in 1823. He was a farmer. He was astrict member of the Christian Church and a strong temperance advocate never allowing whisky to enter his home except in the form of medicine.He was a staunch Democrat.
John was a Captain in the Mexican War (1846-1848).
John administrated the Will of Martha Patsey GANNON (his aunt) after 1850, Cannon Co., TN.
