Dirk Gerdes was born on February 16th, 1831 in Ihrhove, Ostfriesland, Germany and his baptism took place on February 20th, 1831.1   Dirk Gerdes' father was Geerd Hinderks Lübberts and his mother was Geeske Harms (Sinnen) Sinning.  His paternal grandparents were Hinderk Geerds Lübbers and Swaantje Geerds; his maternal grandparents were Harm Edden Sinning and Meye Geerts. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Harm Edden, Hinderk Geerds "Henry", Dirk Geerds, Lübbertus Geerds, Swaantje Geerds and Maÿe Gerdes.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 66 on November 4th, 1897 in Emery, McCook County, South Dakota, USA.  He was buried in Emery Community Cemetery - Emery, Hanson County, South Dakota.1 1

‌Dirk Gerdes and Janna Christina Evert were married in a religious ceremony on May 7th, 1862 in Driever, Ostfriesland, Germany.1   They had six sons and three daughters, named Geerd Dirks (George), Evert, Abbe, Dirk, Dick, Harm, Hilka, Gesi "Mary" and Jannetta "Nettie".
