Thomas' father was Reubin Manning and his mother was Sarah (Sallie) Staton. His paternal grandparents were Marcom Manning and Keziah Ballentine; his maternal grandparents were Jesse Staton and Rebecca Everett. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Reubin Staton, John, Ethalinda, Sarah, Elizabeth and Kezia.-
