John Lawrence Graham was born in 1846 in Pitt County, NC. John Lawrence Graham's father was William "Billy" Manning and his mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Matthews. His paternal grandparents were Micajah "Michael" Manning and Margaret "Peggy" Whitehurst; his maternal grandparents were William Matthews and Mary Taylor. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William M, Talbert M., Mary Ann, Magzilla "Ziley", Nancy Anne Elizabeth and Caroline. He was the third oldest of the seven children.-
