His paternal grandparents were Louis II of Montbelliard and Sophia Countess of Bar-le-Duc; his maternal grandparents were Guillaume I "The Great" of Bourgogne Count/Bourgogne and Stephanie (Etienette) of Barcelona. He had nine brothers and eight sisters, named Renaud I Count of, Thierry III de, Louis de, Frederic, Count Friedrich I of, Guillaume de, Etienne, Count Reinald I of, Bishop Stephan of, Princess Gunhild of, Mathilde, Marguerite De Montbelliard, Mechtild de, Agnes De, Clementia de, Gunthilde and Princess Irmtrud of.
