"In August 1863, Calvin Teel and his son John Teel who was age 17,
enlisted in the Confederate Army. According to the Historical Roll
signed at Petersburg, Virginia in January 1865, they served
consecutively in Command B of 60th Alabama Infantry, Command C of the
3rd Battalion, Hillards's Legion and Rebecca Williams Riffles' and
fought in the battles at Knoxville, Beans Station, Dandridge, Chester,
Brooks Turnpike, Drury's Bluff and Petersburg. Calvin Teel got very sick
after the battle of Petersburg and in October 1864 was given a three
month furlough to go home to recover. Because he was still not well, in
January 1865, while on his way to Montgomery to get his furlough
extended, he died. He was the first to be buried in what came to be known
as the Teel Cemetery, located in the woods at the top of the hill
overlooking his home (Teel Cemetery in Weogufka, Alabama, Coosa County.)"
