William James Spradley 
William James was born on January 4th, 1839 in Kershaw Co., SC.1 William James' father was John Bryant Spradley and his mother was Martha Jane M. Smith. His paternal grandparents were James, Jr. Spradley and Jane (?). He had five brothers and four sisters, named John Dillard, Hamilton Boykin, George David, Henry F., Thomas Albert, Malissa Lillie, Rebecca, Martha Elizabeth and Emma Henrietta. He was the third oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 84 on May 18th, 1923 in Columbia, Richland Co., SC. He was buried in Mt. James Spradley was one of the early volunteers in the CSA. He enlisted in
the Dekalb Rifle Guards, Company J., Gregg's Regiment, SC Volunteers on
April 24, 1861. (See Part Two, Historic Camden by Kirkland & Kennedy,
1926 p.452). During the battle of First Manassas this Company guarded the
camps and was not engaged. After the battle, owing to some disagreemnt it
was disbanded and its members joined other commands. James went to the
Kershaw Guards along with his brother, John Dillard Spradley. They were
in Company D, 15th Regiment Infantry. All but one of this company were
from Kershaw County. He was later wounded and his brother, John was
killed in the Wilderness Battle in South Carolin. (See Historic Camden,
Part two p. 458).
James was living in Lynchburg, Sumter County, SC when the 1870 census was
taken on August 12th. He gave farming as his occupation and his wife
Sallie was a housekeeper.
