From "Simon Russell of Alabama His Ancestry and Descendants" compiled
by Marjorie Douglas Russell: When I first met the Alabama Russell
cousins I learned that Samuel Tines Russell had been married twice
(Gerden came through the second marriage) but no one had any information
on the first wife until a court action in Butler County contesting a will
of Simon Russell (the youngest son of Samuel) and his second wife Mahaza)
brought by a granddaughter of Samuel's first wife, Catherine. Until then
the second batch of grandchildren didn't even know the name of the first
wife.
It seems that Samuel and Catherine had two children, both girls.
After Catherine's death Samuel married Mahaza Spradley and together they
had three boys and two girls. After Samuel's death Mahaza lived on at
the homestead with her two youngest children Eugenia and Simon. When she
died at age 100 only Simon was left at home and she left the property to
him. Well, as son as Mama died Simon married and they had a child which
lived only a short while and Simon himself lived only a few years longer,
leaving a will that gave everything to his wife.
That was when the granddaughter of Catherine contested the Will. The
court action named all know descendants of Samuel Tines who just might
possibly have a claim on the homestead. The originator was Mollie Lowry
Dickens and I wrote to her and received a reply ....dated May 16, 1968.
Info re parents birth, marriage and death dates. She married 30
