Her paternal grandparents were James Monroe Garrett and Mary Elizabeth Haynes; her maternal grandmother was Nancy C. Ray. She had seven brothers and a sister, named John Leamon, Laney Monroe, Lonie D., Willie Leon, J. D., Clarence Bervie, Charles Calvin and Katie Lou. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
