Her paternal grandparents were James Monroe Davis and Sarah Caroline Steele. She had three brothers and a sister, named Leon Eugene, Edward, Clinton and Wilma Geraldine. She was the third oldest of the five children. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Clarence, Harley Lance, Albert Clanton, Ellis Lowell, Floyd Devoe and Benrice.-
