Uriah Addison Darden was born on 23 September 1825 in Warren County, GA.
His parents were Moses Darden and Nancy Wynne. His grandparents were
Stephen Darden and Nancy Ann Ellington. Stephen was a Revolutionary War
Soldier. In 1829 Uriah's mother, Nancy Wynne, and his grandmother, Nancy
Ann Ellington, both died. His father, Moses Darden, left GA in 1830 and
migrated to Chambers County, AL. At that time Uriah would have been five
years old. His father, Moses Darden, married his second wife, Elizabeth
Stevens, on 19 June 1834 in Chambers County, AL. Between 1836 and 1853
Moses and Elizabeth had eleven children. Uriah was raised by Moses and
Elizabeth until about 1845 when he moved out of his parent's home and
moved to Talladega County, AL.
Uriah Addison Darden did not stay in Talladega County, AL very long.
He moved to the adjacent Coosa County, AL. He was the first Darden to
settle in Coosa County. He built a home and settled in a community known
as Bentleyville in those days near Hanover, AL. The record shows that he
married Mary Logan in Coosa County on 18 March 1847. Mary was the
daughter of Houston Alexander Logan and Martha Ann Smith. Between 1849
and 1872 Uriah and Mary had ten children as follows: Frank Darden b.
about 1849, d. about 1849; John Alexander Darden b.8 Jul 1850, m. Georgia
Ann Webb 21 Feb 1878, d. 22 Jan 1884; William Stephen Darden b. 16 Sep

Jan 1901, d. 7 Jan 1951. Most of the children lived in and around Coosa
County most of their lives. They married, had their own families, and
are buried in Popular Springs Cemetery, Andrew's Chapel Cemetery, and Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery, all near Hanover, AL. Some of William Stephen's
descendants settled in and around Talladega Springs, Talladega, AL. Some
went to Raton and Clayton, NM. Martha Jane married and moved to
Kingston, GA where she is buried.
Uriah Addison Darden served in the Civil War. From the Alabama
Department of Archives and History Uriah enlisted 24 February 1862 at
Rockford, Coosa, AL and served with Company A, 46th Alabama Infantry
Regiment. He was present at the engagements at Tagewell, TN, 4 Aug 1862;
Port Gibson, MS, 1 May 1863; Baker's Creek, MS, 16 May 1863; and
Vicksburg, MS, 17 May to 4 Jul 1863. He was captured at Lookout
Mountain, 24 Nov 1863 and was a prisoner until the end of the war. Uriah
was a saddler by trade and he perfected his trade while a prisoner.
The archives show that Uriah applied for a pension in 1901 due to his
old age and general debility. In the application he reveals that he was
wounded nine times during the war and was shot in the head from which he
never completely recovered. It, also, reveals that in about 1883 Uriah
was castrated due to a testicular disease. This shows that he suffered
the vicissitudes of age. There is no record that he ever got the
pension. Uriah died in Coosa County, AL on 17 Jul 1903. He is buried in
the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Hanover, AL. His wife, Mary Logan,
preceded him in death on 29 Jan 1899 in Coosa County and is buried in the
Popular Springs Cemetery near Hanover. The writer is among Uriah's
descendants being one of his double great grandsons.
Uriah Addison Darden and Mary Logan are representative of the early
settlers of AL. Both are grandchildren of Revolutionary War Soldiers,
Stephen Darden and John A. Logan, respectively. These were the
