Joan de was born about 1269 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, England.  Joan de's father was William de Valence , Earl of Pembroke and her mother was Joan de Munchensy.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh X de Lusignan , Count Angouleme\La Marche and Isabella Taillefer de Angouleme; her maternal grandparents were Warin de Munchensy , Lord of Swanscomb and Joan Marshal. She had a sister named Isabel de.  She was the younger of the two children.

‌Joan de and John III "The Red" were married in a religious ceremony before 1291 in Badenoch, Inverness, Scotland.  They had a son and two daughters, named John IV, Joan and Elizabeth.
