Documentary proof that James de Sancto Hilario took his name from this place has been given in 'Early Yorkshire Charters', vol. v, pp. 86-7. James was the son of Harculf de St. James, taking his name from St. James-de-Beuvron (arr. Avranches) nearby. Gerville described the remains of the castle at St-Hilaire in 1827.
