ROBERT (DE SCALES), LORD SCALES, son and heir, aged 26 and more at his father's death. On 8 October 1305 the King took his homage and commanded the escheator to give him seisin. Summoned to Parliament from 3 November 1306 to 14 March 1321/2; summoned on 18 January 1307/8 to attend the Coronation; knighted at Westminster with Prince Edward, 22 May 1306; summoned to serve against Robert le Brus, 1308; against the Scots, 1315, 1316, 1318, 1319, 1322, 1323; forbidden to attend the convention of peers at Doncaster, 1321. In 1314 he granted a well to the Friars Minors of Lynn. In 1319 he was a Commissioner of oyer and terminer, Norfolk and in 1324, de walliis et fossatis, Marshland near Lynn, Norfolk.
He m. Egeline.[i] He died 20 March, 1324/5. Egeline survived him and died on or before 10 October 1335. [Complete Peerage XI:500-1]
[i] G.E.C., again apparently following Chester Waters (Chesters of Chicheley, vol. i, pp. 253-55) says that Egeline was sister of Hugh, Earl of Devon, and daughter of Sir Hugh Courtenay, of Okehampton, Devon, by Eleanor, daughter of Hugh (le Despenser), Lord le Despenser, citing the Scales Peerage Case; but the evidence there given (p. 101) consisted only of a citation from the Fine Roll of 18 Edward II (Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. iii, pp. 346, 350), which does not give the surname. Anselme, vol. vii, p. 839A, makes the same statement as Chester Waters. Cussans (Hist. Herts., Edwinstree Hund., P. 28) refers to Hari. MS. 97 1, f i o2, which gives no parentage. Dugdale (Baronage, vol. i, p. 617) relies on the collections of Glover, Somerset Herald. A note by the late Miss Ethel Stokes gives as the authority for the marriage an account of the Courtenay family thought to have been compiled in the time of Edward III by a monk of Ford (Pole MS., no. 3487, Exeter Transcript).
