Thomas de Berkeley the Rich was born in 1292 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Thomas de Berkeley the Rich's father was Sir Maurice de Berkeley Lord Berkeley and his mother was Eva la Zouche. His paternal grandparents were Sir Thomas de Berkeley Lord Berkeley and Joan de Ferrers; his maternal grandparents were Eudes la Zouche and Millicent de Cantelou. He had a brother and two sisters, named Sir Maurice, Isabel and Millicent "Ela". He died at the age of 69 on October 27th, 1361 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire.General Notes
Thomas, 3rd baron, m. 1st, Margaret, dau. of Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, and 2ndly, in 1347, Catherine, dau. of Sir John Clyvedon, widow of Sir Peter le Veel. This lord having adhered to the interest of the Queen, Mortimer, and Prince Edward, afterwards the third of that name, furnished "the only precedent," says Smith, "of a peer being tried by knights, as the peers would have been both judges and jurors." He first assumed a mitre for his crest. He was summoned to parliament from 1329 to 1360. He had issue by his 1st wife, besides his heir, three sons, who d. s. p., and one dau., Joan, wife of Sir Reginald Cobham; by his 2nd wife, had had, with three sons, who d. s. p., a 4th, John, ancestor of the Berkeleys of Beverstone. He d. 1361 and was s. by his son, Maurice, 4th baron.
