Richard Thomas was born on October 8th, 1806 in Dillon Co, Sc.1 Richard Thomas' father was John Roper and his mother was Martha Capel. His paternal grandparents were Richard Roper and 1St Wife Unknown; his maternal grandparents were William Capel and Anne Unknown. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Frederick S, John, William C, James F, Nancy S, Elizabeth C, Martha, Mary Mason and Sara K. He was the third youngest of the ten children.
