His paternal grandparents were Earl William Douglas and Countess Margaret Stewart Of Angus; his maternal grandparents were King Robert John III Stewart Of Scotland and Annabella Drummond. He had two sisters named Mary and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Gilbert and William.
