Mahala was born on July 29th, 1857 in Worth County, Missouri.1 Mahala's father was Henry Sowards and her mother was Matilda Brumfield. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Sowards and Rosannah Spears; her maternal grandparents were John Brumfield and Mary Plaster. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named John, Henry, James, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Albert, Isaac Anderson, Franklin, Amon, Griffin, Joseph, Eliza Jane, Mary Ann, Martha and Anna. She was the fifth oldest of the fifteen children.-
