Eliza Jane was born on April 28th, 1853 in Worth County, Missouri.1 Eliza Jane's father was Henry Sowards and her mother was Matilda Brumfield. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Sowards and Rosannah Spears; her maternal grandparents were John Brumfield and Mary Plaster. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named John, Henry, James, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Albert, Isaac Anderson, Franklin, Amon, Griffin, Joseph, Mary Ann, Mahala, Martha and Anna. She was the oldest of the fifteen children.-
