James Shanks 
James was born in 1840 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 James' father was John S. Shanks and his mother was Nancy. His paternal grandfather was John Shanks. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Jacob, Henry, George, Susan, Jane, Emeline and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
