Julia Ann was born on March 24th, 1823 in ,Sullivan, Tennessee.1 Julia Ann's father was Philip Smith Hale and her mother was Elizabeth Bachman. Her paternal grandparents were Philip Heale and Catherine Douglas; her maternal grandparents were Nathan Bachman and Ann Peoples. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named Nathan Bachman, Philip Smith, William Douglas, Catherine Ann, Eliza Jane, Sarah Amanda, Matilda Antoinette, Mary Bachman, Frances Louisa, Adelaide, Cornelia Josephine and Martha Ellen. She was the third oldest of the thirteen children.-
