Her paternal grandparents were Philip Heale and Catherine Douglas; her maternal grandparents were Nathan Bachman and Ann Peoples. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named Nathan Bachman, Philip Smith, William Douglas, Catherine Ann, Eliza Jane, Julia Ann, Sarah Amanda, Matilda Antoinette, Mary Bachman, Frances Louisa, Adelaide and Martha Ellen. She was the second youngest of the thirteen children.-
