The family lived on the 100-acre tract of land on Wolf Creek, in Pulaski County, Kentucky, received by Kentucky land Warrent and surveyed on December 13, 1834. William's father and brothers John and James also owned land on this same creek.
The family can be found in the 1830 Pulaski County, Kentucky census under the name of William Cumbast as Head of Family.

At some time between 1838 and 1840, William and Gilla migrated to Missouri with their family of seven children. The first of the three children born in Missouri was on September 10, 1840. Gilla's father, Andrew Jasper, also went to Missouri and settled in DeKalb County, exact date not known.
